City Tour of Bogota
Paloquemao’s market place: Paloquemao is the second biggest food market in Bogotá and its history dates back a few decades. The usual visitors of Paloquemao are locals and often restaurant owners who are buying their weekly supplies. Adapting to its usual crowd, the market is set for buying in big bulks and consists of large alleys with store after store overflowing with the most mouthwatering ingredients from fresh fruits and vegetables to roots, spices, herbs, meat, and fish. While some stores offer ridiculous amounts of one product (there are entire avocado stores – welcome to heaven) others blow your mind with the variety they offer. They have everything from the oil you heat up in the pan to the garnish that you use to decorate the finished dish.
Gold Museum: Bogotá’s most famous museum and one of the most fascinating in South America, the Gold Museum contains more than 55,000 pieces of gold and other materials from all of Colombia’s major pre-Hispanic cultures.
Visit Monserrate: Transfer by funicular or cable car to Monserrate, one of the most important symbols of Bogotá. If you are in Bogotá, you really can’t miss it. From every corner you go, you cannot ignore Monserrate, a mountain almost 3,200 meters high. The name is derived from the Montserrat mountain, near Barcelona, in Spain.
Candelaria neighbourhood: It is also the only area of Bogota where streets have proper names. The name “Candelaria” comes from the church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, built by the Augustinian Fathers. It is this part of the city that once earned the name “Athens of the Andes.” Its brightly-colored houses, its flowery patios, its beamed ceilings, its carved wooden balconies, and its narrow cobble paved streets have the charm of Southern Spain.
